Good for the Tories

Too bad if the Chinese commies are angry. Trade is important, but so are human rights! Trade-hungry Tories risk Chinese wrath by lauding exiled Dalai Lama in Ottawa By Mike Blanchfield, The Canadian Press | The Canadian Press – 13 hours ago RELATED CONTENT The Dalai Lama speaks at the 6th World Parliamentarians' Convention on Tibet in Ottawa, … OTTAWA - The Harper government firmly aligned itself Friday with one of China's sworn enemies — the Dalai Lama, who thanked the world for its support of Tibetan Buddhists under siege. His voice resonating through Ottawa's historic, high-ceilinged conference centre that was once the capital's main train station, the charismatic, orange-robed Tibetan holy leader said his "ancient nation, with ancient culture, is in danger of dying." "As fellow human brothers, sisters really showing us your solidarity, and you really want to do something, I very much appreciate," the Dalai Lama said, leaning over his dais to address the Sixth World Parliamentarians' Convention on Tibet.

In this China, or rather the Chinese government, is the one with the problem, not Canada and not the Dalai Lama. In fact China has no justification for invading Tibet and its behaviour there and treatment of Tibetans is shameful.

Alain, you are wrong and clearly have very little knowledge about China or its 4000 year history.

I am not justifying China's actions, but you are trying to paint it as a black and white issue and that is wrong. In fact, before 2008, many Tibetans supported being a part of China due to liberalization and rapid economic growth. It is just in recent years that circumstances have turned sour.

Some academics suggest that China invaded Tibet due to the threat of British presence there. I hope you realize that Western colonialists had a large role to play in many unfortunate circumstances.

To be quite honest, I wonder whether people who comment on Tibet even KNOW where it is on a map. China is such a huge and complex issue, it really takes dedicated study to understand it better.
