I celebrated Pesach with my friend Owner and Doggy and his family, as I have done for many years. It was great as always to celebrate with my friends and to remember our common heritage. This weekend is Easter. When Christians around the world will celebrate the Risen Christ. Both holidays celebrate freedom and redemption. I wish a Happy Passover to all my Jewish friends.
I also remember one who is not free. Who is kept hostage by the enemies of freedom, Gilad Shalit. He has been kept hostage by the terrorist group hamas for 5 years! He must be freed and returned to his family! All governments must demand freedom for Gilad Shalit.
It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to the Canadian Jewish community as you gather to celebrate Pesach.
Pesach is a time when loved ones come together to commemorate the Exodus from Egypt and the struggle of the Children of Israel to be free. Pesach is a symbol of freedom triumphing over oppression, it stands as a testament to the determination and unwavering faith of the Jewish people. Throughout the centuries, the Jewish people have drawn strength and inspiration from this momentous event in our shared history.
Canada has been immeasurably enriched by the contributions of Jewish Canadians. The community has played an integral role in the creation of our pluralistic society which values tolerance and understanding between people of all faiths and cultural backgrounds.
Please accept my heartfelt wishes, as well as those of my wife Laureen, and all members of our Conservative Party, for a happy and peaceful Pesach.
Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper
Leader- Conservative Party of Canada
