I saw the Can Stage production of the Michel Tremblay play Saint Carmen of the Main. It is the first time I have seen this iconic play about the underbelly of Montreal. It is written as a Greek tragedy complete with chorus. Tremblay writes most often about Quebec's poor and is an ardent separatist. The separatist theme is once again seen in this play, where the central theme is giving the poor and marginalized an independent voice. I actually enjoyed the performance. Though I did find it somewhat obviously preachy. The Chorus is dressed in red nylon. Carmen herself is dressed like Lady Gaga at a rodeo.
The reviews have not been great.
