Cutting the civil service

This is a good start, but we need to cut far more civil servants. I think it is a good plan though

ts five-step plan suggests:

-. Cutting the ranks of the federal public service, whose ranks ballooned by 35 per cent over the past decade.

"From $12.8 billion in 1999/2000, the total cost of Ottawa's non-military/RC-MP personnel increased ... to reach $24.4 billion in 2009/2010," the report said.

The institute said reducing the number of public servants by two per cent a year over the next four years could deliver more than half the improvement needed to achieve a surplus by 2014/15;

-. Controlling the costs of government pension plans that are the envy of many in the country who lack pension coverage entirely and requiring public servants to pay a greater share of those pensions;

-. Trimming transfers to Crown corporations to spur greater efficiencies similar to that achieved by private-sector enterprises;

-. Ensuring that plans in the 2010 federal budget to save $17.6 billion over five years are carried through and that already extended stimulus spending deadlines conclusively halt;

-. Reviewing a tax system that is riddled with myriad exemptions, deductions, rebates and deferrals to achieve putative economic and social objectives.
