A response to Mme Carbonneau
My friend and co founder of the Reseau Liberte Quebec replied to the CSN's Mme Carbonneau recent fear mongering about the Quebec Freedom Network and the right in Quebec.
I translated it using Google translate.
Ms. Carbonneau - First, I wanted to wish you a wonderful year 2011. We look forward to crossing swords with you in the arena of political debate in Quebec. In my opinion, you should feel the same enthusiasm. Is not it refreshing to discuss our current political system in the context of left-right confrontation? Admit that you are interested in the emergence of the Freedom Network-Québec (RLQ), you do not stop to warn the people against evil ideas!
By the way, I wanted to thank you deeply. You have probably noticed that we do not have the financial resources comparable to those of the CSN. Moreover, our investments in advertising are, how shall I say, zero. We therefore welcome any media exposure you generate, every time you speak to us in the media. We are also delighted when you send mass mailings denouncing us to your union members. You see, as we have great confidence in the intelligence of your members, we appreciate the fact that you have given us so many potential supporters.
Once I have thanked you and wished you well, I still want to respond to two of your assertions.
First, you declare in a statement that "the freedoms they [RLQ] claim are mere illusions " for the vast majority of people who will never be able to experience them . You see, I firmly believe that you're wrong. To me, the citizen has the means to avail themselves of the freedom not to be forced to pay dues to a union that he does not want to join. Young people have the means to fully abandoned hope of seniority as a promotion mechanism in unionized firms. Young people have the means to desire the end of the compulsory levy of a contribution to the Quebec Pension Plan, which increasingly resembles a Ponzi scheme. The baby boomers have a legitimate right to want the late fees ridiculously low, which retain their high taxes. People are perfectly legitimate to think that mechanisms of competition would reduce the cost of many public services.
You know, Ms. Carbonneau, it is perfectly normal that people want more freedom in their lives. You know why? Because now they are also willing to take more responsibility to ensure that the state of their homes, their families and especially their pockets. They have confidence in their abilities and are willing to pay for what they use and what they consume. This is so they are also tired of paying for artists who spend their time on the lecture, so they do not even use their "art."
Then, when you remember that "many scandals that erupted throughout the year, in Quebec, just private companies involved," I only have a taste for you to give ten minute misconduct, for crass populism excessive and demagoguery. You forget too quickly the involvement of unions and governments in all this mess of corruption.
Go and Have a happy new year!

A Moderate Muslim
A good article from an American Muslim, who totally understands the jihadi threat. Wish more of our our politicians understood
Why Muslims must look in the mirror
By M. ZUHDI JASSER
If 2010 was the year America finally woke up to political Islam's ne farious reach on US soil, with luck 2011 will be the year we launch an offensive against it. One way to begin that process is through hearings that Rep. Peter King (R-NY), the new chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, plans to hold on American Muslim radicalization.
Attention to this issue offers an opportunity for American Muslims to confront the radicalization problem and provide solutions -- as only they can.
My group, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, believes these hearings will shed light on the diversity of American Muslims, giving our community a chance to step from behind the veil of Muslim victimization and address head-on the need for long-overdue ideological reforms.
King: Will hold hear ings on "homegrown radicals."
Alas, the announcement of the hearings has triggered heated denunciations by groups like ISNA, CAIR and MPAC, which try to deny and obfuscate the connection between "political Islam," or Islamism, and terror.

No Federal election until 2012
The grits are already backing down. iffy really is a waffler. I don't think the grits will vote against the next budget, in numbers great enough to defeat HM Government. The grits are too broke and pathetic I don't see an election before 2012.
OTTAWA — The federal Liberals have no plan to take down the Conservatives over the upcoming budget, but instead will wait and see if the Harper government reverses its course on such major policies as corporate tax cuts, a Grit MP said Thursday.
Halifax MP Geoff Regan brushed off suggestions the Liberals would vote against an upcoming Conservative budget and possibly trigger an election as early as February or March.

John Stossel on consumer protection
John Stossel explains once again why we need to let the market function. The unintended consequences of "helping" the consumer.
Please Stop "Helping" Us
by John Stossel
Last year, Congress passed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act. It was supposed to really end the alleged abuses perpetrated by the credit card companies. The law forbids some penalties and interest-rate increases on existing balances.
It is one of President Obama's proudest achievements.
"Enough's enough," he said. "It's time for strong, reliable protection for our consumers."
Reform, he said, would not come at the expense of honest businesses. "Unless your business model depends on cutting corners or bilking your customers, you've got nothing to fear."
Finally! Protection! A new bureaucracy will stop greedy credit card companies from unfairly penalizing you. And it won't threaten the credit business. Yippie!
How has it worked out?
Not so well. George Mason University Law Professor Todd Zywicki points out that the new restrictions hurt more consumers than they help.

R.I.P. Naomi Bronstein
My deepest sympathies to the family of this truly remarkable woman. She was truly an angel on earth. She saved the lves of many children. hers was truly a life lived well.
MONTREAL — Naomi Bronstein, a Montreal woman who dedicated her life to helping orphaned and sick children in the Third World, died last week in Guatemala. She was 65.
Bronstein died in her sleep after years of poor health, including a heart condition.
Often called the Canadian Mother Teresa, Bronstein is best known for bringing Vietnamese and Cambodian orphans to North America for adoption in the 1970s.
Jeff Danziger, whose adopted daughter Kim was brought to North America by Bronstein in 1975, said Bronstein's humanitarian work with children was "unparalleled."
"She was completely selfless," he said Wednesday.

Polls in Quebec
Interesting CROP poll in Quebec. 7 out of ten don't like the provincial grits. Interesting the ADQ is now polling at 16%. The numbers fro charest are pretty ominous. The provincial grits are running at 25% and 65% say the government is going in the wrong direction. The Federal numbers show the Tories maintaining their base at 20%, while the federal grits are down substantially to 18%.
I am pleased the ADQ is gaining , I hope 2010 brings further gains for the Tories and the ADQ.

RLQophobia
or is that fear of freedom? One of the leader's of a large Quebec union is afraid of my friends and I of the Quebec Freedom network. Thanks for the free publicity claudette. WGe are having an event in Montreal on April 16, 2010. Don't be afraid, come debate with us. It;s quite funny the unions , with their hundreds of millions in compulsory union dues are afraid of a small ( but growing) organization like the RLQ. The RLQ is completely self funded!

Melanie Phillips on the msm war against Israel
Melanie Phillips gave this address at the Honest Reporting Conference in Jerusalem earlier this month. The leftists msm is now a full propaganda arm for the enemies of the west and particularly Israel.
We are living through a global campaign of demonisation and delegitimisation of Israel in which the western media are playing a key role.
The British media are the global leaders of this campaign in their frenzied and obsessional attacks on Israel. In the BBC in particular, such virulence attains unparalleled power and influence since it is stamped with the BBC’s global kitemark of objectivity and trustworthiness.
Israel’s every action is reported malevolently, ascribing to it the worst possible motives and denying its own victimisation. Instead of the truth, which is that every military action by Israel is taken solely to protect itself from attack, it is portrayed falsely as instigating the violent oppression of the Palestinians.
Tyranny around the world — such as the 20-year genocide in southern Sudan, or the persecution of Christians in Africa or Asia — goes almost unreported, as does Palestinian violence upon other Palestinians.
Yet Israel is dwelt upon obsessively, held to standards of behaviour expected of no other country and, with its own victimisation glossed over or ignored altogether, falsely accused of imposing wanton suffering.

Stephen vs barack
Peter Worthington has a column on how HM PM Harper fared in comparison to barack shellacked obama.
Canada was somewhat different.
The Conservative government of Stephen Harper grew in strength, until by year’s end the likelihood of a majority government looms whenever an election is called.
Harper is not perceived as particularly likeable, even though he plays the piano and sings Beatles songs. If they think about it, Canadians realize they are the blessed of the earth in these hard economic times.
Sure, we have problems, but compared to the rest of the world we are fortunate. Our banking system is so reliable and conservative, that it’s the backbone of the country and is saving us all. For the moment.
Harper has even gotten way with reneging on his vow that Canadian troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2011.

More good news for the Tories
Good news for the Tories in yet another poll. The Tories lead on almost every economic issue. Defeat the Tories iffy, I dare you.
"It just shows the strength of the Tory positioning because they're seen as the best on the biggest issue," he said. "The Liberals haven't found an issue, but the Tories have a 20 to 25 per cent advantage on just about every economic question you want to ask."
Although the economy remains a top concern for Canadians, fewer identified it as such in 2010 than in 2009, when it was at a high of 63 per cent. Bricker said the decline can be attributed to the fact fears of a collapsing Canadian economy were never realized, leading to a nationwide impression that the economy will be OK.
Focus on the environment also declined to 19 per cent in 2010 from its October 2007 peak of 27 per cent. But as long as the environment and international economies stay within the focus of the media, Canadians will continue to list both as a top concern, he said.
"Opinions on the economy and environment are driven by news," Bricker said. "So, with oil spilling in the Gulf, or another financial company failing, the numbers on those issues will remain high."

Reseau Liberte Quebec
Thanks to my friend Gerry Nichols for saying the RLQ is one of the bright points for the conservative movement in Canada for 2010.
Reseau Liberte-Quebec
The Reseau Liberte-Quebec, or to use its English name, the Quebec Freedom Network, is a brand new organization dedicated to promoting the ideas of “individual responsibility, free markets and personal choice” in Quebec. And although this group is still small, it’s already punching well above its weight, garnering tremendous media attention for its cause. What’s really impressive about the Network, however, is its goal of putting principle ahead of politics. It does not wish to become a political party and win elections. Rather it wants to win the war of ideas. And that’s the battle that really counts.

The Lady invited to Canada
I am very pleased that Canada made Aung San Suu Kyi an honourary citizen . She has been invited to Canada to accept this award. I don't think she will come. She is afraid that the mirderous generals won't let her return to Burma. Indeed she wasn't even able to see her dying husband because of this fear. She is an amazing woman. Canada has again urged the Burmese Junta to engage with the rightful leader of Burma. She is one of my personal heroes. She isa true freedom fighter.
Canada to invite Burmese democracy leader to Canada
27 December 2010
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the invitation of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to Canada.
"I am pleased to announce that the Government of Canada has invited Aung San Suu Kyi to Canada to personally accept her honorary Canadian citizenship. We recognize that Aung San Suu Kyi's immediate priority since her release from house arrest is to focus her energies on consultations and dialogue within Burma, before embarking on international travel. We hope, however, that she will be able at the appropriate time to accept our invitation.
"Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded honorary Canadian citizenship by the Parliament of Canada in 2007. On November 13, 2010, she was released after being held under house arrest for almost 15 years.
"Canada's policy toward Burma reflects the serious problems that the military regime has created for its people. Canada is proud to have stood firmly with Aung San Suu Kyi and those working for Burmese democracy for these many years.
"Canada once again calls on the Burmese regime to engage in a meaningful, inclusive dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratic and ethnic leaders to ensure a better future for all Burmese people, in which their fundamental rights are respected and their long-held desire for the restoration of democracy is realized."

Very Sad
This story is just so very sad and so needlessly tragic. Please , Please, Please don't drink and drive. My thoughts and prayers are with both families.
The ordeal has left both families grieving. Mr. Tobin, who is out on bail and barred from contacting most of his friends – including the victim’s family – doesn’t know whether he’s allowed to attend his best friend’s funeral.
“We cannot begin to describe our profound sadness as Alex and our son Jack have been the best of friends for many years. These two young men were very close. Alex’s tragic death is devastating for two families,” a Tobin family statement said, extending its heartfelt condolences to the Zolpis family.
Mr. Tobin, who is also 24, wept during a court hearing on Christmas Day before being released on $100,000 bail. He’s now confined by court order to his parents’ home in Manotick, Ont., near Ottawa, and is barred from drinking and from contacting most of his friends.

Fountain of youth?
very interesting. It seems that blocking the effects of Growth Hormone may be a way to stop aging. Growth factors do encourage cancers and GH blockers can stop the growth of cancers, so this is quite interesting and not what has been main stream thinking. I will watch with interest as this research continues. Read the abstract here.
'Un-Growth Hormone' Increases Longevity, Researchers Find
ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2010) — A compound which acts in the opposite way as growth hormone can reverse some of the signs of aging, a research team that includes a Saint Louis University physician has shown. The finding may be counter-intuitive to some older adults who take growth hormone, thinking it will help revitalize them.
Their research was published in the Dec. 6 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The findings are significant, says John E. Morley, M.D., study co-investigator and director of the divisions of geriatric medicine and endocrinology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, because people sometimes take growth hormone, believing it will be the fountain of youth.
"Many older people have been taking growth hormone to rejuvenate themselves," Morley said. "These results strongly suggest that growth hormone, when given to middle aged and older people, may be hazardous."

More Holiday cheer from the grits ( and iffy cartoons)
catsmeat has given us this gem about iffy.
Ignatieff: His year-end interviews — for which his staff purportedly prepared him, and in which he said he hoped to defeat Harper in 2011 and that he and Rob Ford shared like-minded voters — were embarrassing.
But his worst move, in the view of the majority of card-carrying Liberals and the Grit caucus, was listening to Bob Rae, and going along with extending Canada’s stay in Afghanistan. Many Liberals have long suspected Iggy’s political default position is always (a) to be a closeted conservative and (b) to parrot the White House line. The Afghanistan reversal showed why.
So the only issue where iffy has actually shown a little leadership , has made grit partisans mad. Keep up the good work grits. Let's have that election.

More holiday gifts for the Tories
Angelo Persichilli writes about the ongoing self destruction of the grits. Couldn't happen to nicer people. It seems there are many factions. Not surprising for a party that has no principles and only exists to gain power and distribute money to their friends. Ok , I admit I am guilty of shadenfreude.
It took 10 years, from 1993 to 2003, for the Conservatives to put aside most of their differences and work together. It’s ironic that the same year the Tories started bridging their differences, the Liberals grew apart.
Moreover, the division among them is more dangerous. The Conservative fight was in the open and the division was a clear split between two visions. The Liberals are more than divided, they are fragmented by personal vendettas, jealousies and a lack of leadership.
Despite the front of a happy family, they are fighting each other over differences from the past while creating new ones. This fight no longer has anything to do with Martin and Chrétien; it’s about the metastasis of that disease which has taken on a life of its own.
One symptom is the way the party makes changes. Whether they involve staff or a leader, they are always traumatic. People don’t leave, they’re politically executed.
Debris from hard-fought leadership conventions has always been present in the Liberal party, but things deteriorated when the Liberals tried to get rid of John Turner, and they got out of control during the Chrétien-Martin feud.
Ever since, Liberal leaders have been changed in much the same way the old Soviet Union used to renew its leadership — each successor would obliterate his predecessor, who was forced out in disgrace.
The symbolism around the Liberal leader has changed. Post-Chrétien, each Liberal leader has become a puppet in the hands of a small group of backroom individuals fighting each other while waiting for their turn to be on top — with the same or another puppet leader — and using their positions to get even with their rivals.
Recent history is full of good people humiliated and loyalties destroyed. They want respect and loyalty from the same people they publicly humiliate. Their culture of entitlement makes them believe they can trample over anyone and then impose loyalty in times of need.
Is this is the new grit theme song? It sucks to be a grit..

Merry Christmas
I want to wish my family and friends and my readers a very Merry Christmas. I hope you are all together with your loved ones t this blessed time.
A Christmas Prayer
Loving Father, help us to remember the birth
of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and the worship of the wise men.
Close the door of hate and
open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and
good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing
which Christ brings, and teach us to
be merry with clear hearts.
May the Christmas morning make us happy
to be Thy children, and the Christmas evening
bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen!

Christmas in the Holy Land
It saddens me that my Brothers and sisters in Christ are persecuted in the Holy lnad. Some by silly and intolerant people like this mayor and others much more violently by the jihadis. Banning the Cross in Bethlehem, it makes me want to weep. Please pray for the Christians of the Middle east.

The suicidal British left?
This report is pretty depressing and makes me wonder if the left has lost the will to live. perhaps they feel so depressed about the triumph of western values , that they feel they must scarifice themselves and us on the altar of jihadi extremism. Sigh....
The jihad of the British Left
THURSDAY, 23RD DECEMBER 2010
A new and authoritative report by Ehud Rosen has just been published by the Jerusalem Institute for Public Affairs, which maps the forces behind the campaign of demonisation and delegitimisation of Israel and shows how the UK has become the global hub of such bigotry.
But the UK has also become the global hub, outside the Arab and Muslim world itself, of Muslim radicalisation. The two phenomena are, of course, symbiotically connected. And what Rosen shows is how the radicalisation of British Muslims – an issue of the greatest possible concern in Britain -- is not just the result of extremist Muslim preachers and the like. It has also been actively pushed by the far left.
It has often been remarked upon with surprise that in Britain, the supposedly ‘antifascist’ left marches shoulder to shoulder against Israel and America with the most obscurantist Islamist fanatics who believe in extinguishing the freedom -- and sometimes even the lives -- of women, gays and apostates in the Muslim world, let alone unbelievers anywhere else.

Ann Coulter on charity
Who gives the most to charity? Who volunteers most? Ann has the answers.
Ann Coulter:
Scrooge Was a Liberal
It's the Christmas season, so godless liberals are citing the Bible to demand the redistribution of income by government force. Didn't Jesus say, "Blessed are the Health and Human Services bureaucrats, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"?
Liberals are always indignantly accusing conservatives of claiming God is on our side. What we actually say is: We're on God's side, particularly when liberals are demanding God's banishment from the public schools, abortion on demand, and taxpayer money being spent on Jesus submerged in a jar of urine and pictures of the Virgin Mary covered with pornographic photos.
But for liberals like Al Franken, it's beyond dispute that Jesus would support extending federal unemployment insurance.
This has absolutely nothing to do with the Bible, but it does nicely illustrate Shakespeare's point that the "devil can cite Scripture for his purpose."
What the Bible says about giving to the poor is: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians (9:7)
Being forced to pay taxes under penalty of prison is not voluntary and rarely done cheerfully. Nor do our taxes go to "the poor." They mostly go to government employees who make more money than you do.

monbiot explains every thing that has ever happened or ever will happen
Dan Hannan and James Delingpole have expose george monbiot's latest fantasies. The problem for the chicken littles is their models just don't work very well and they never seem to predict what actually happens. The chicken littles struggle to make the data fit their theories.
As Dan Hannan has noticed, the Moonbat has finally flipped.
Snow, he is trying to tell us in all earnestness, is another sign that Man Made Global Warming is definitely happening. Nothing to do with solar minima or El Nino and La Nina or any of that reality-based nonsense. No, sirree. It’s definitely, definitely still our fault because of all that evil plant-food our factories have been pumping into the atmosphere. Weather is not the same as climate. Etc.
Here are what some of George’s fans at Komment Macht Frei have to say about his latest post:
So even when you’re wrong you’re right? [It has had over 400 recommends, that one]
What will the cold be caused by next week George?
Thanks for keeping us up to date on The Daily Cause.
Sure, the cold tried to hide the Climategate evidence.
Sounds like a just-so story to me. Whatever happens, it is exactly what we would expect to happen under global warming. Hotter, colder, drier, wetter, sunnier, cloudier, windier, whatever.
George, what type of weather could people in Britain expect to see if global warming isn’t happening?

bo once again agress with president Bush...
polar bears are not endangered.
The Obama administration is sticking with a George W. Bush-era decision to deny polar bears endangered species status.
In a court filing Wednesday, the Fish and Wildlife Service defended the previous administration's decision to give the polar bear the less-protective "threatened" species designation, a move that will frustrate environmentalists who hoped for stronger protections under the Endangered Species Act.
FWS Director Rowan Gould said the 2008 "threatened" listing was made "following careful analysis of the best scientific information, as required by the ESA."
At the time, the service determined the bears weren't danger of extinction, so did not warrant the "endangered" status. The bears were listed as "threatened" because they face serious threats from projected decline in its sea ice habitat due to global warming would result in them likely being in danger of extinction in the foreseeable future.
FWS is "confident it was and is the appropriate status," Gould said.

Venezuelan President Chavez' Teflon popularity fraying at the edges
BY DANIEL DUQUENAL, MONTREAL GAZETTE DECEMBER 22, 2010
CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan heads are spinning in disbelief at President Hugo Chavez' latest antics.
Since the last parliamentary elections, held on Sept. 26, Chavez and the current, lame-duck National Assembly have cancelled any role that the newly-elected assembly would expect to be playing in the next term, which is scheduled to start on January 5. Along the way and for all practical purpose, he has also annulled the 1999 Bolivarian constitution.
First, remember that the Sept. 26 parliamentary elections have been tainted with hints as to its legitimacy, which is becoming more and more apparent as the current National Assembly has launched a series of stunning legislative measures, including the prohibition of representatives to vote according to their conscience and switch sides, a new law to regulate communications that will include control over the Internet, making it easier for the regime to close down any media it dislikes, a declaration that banks are now a public service, allowing the government to intervene in any bank under any pretext and, most important of all, the fourth enabling law since Chavez has become president in 1999.
This new enabling law, which will last 18 months, allows the regime to legislate by decree on almost any matter of importance, from raising new taxes to reviewing "security" matters.

L.Ian Macdonald on Senator Smith
I am very excited about Senator and Candidate Smith and so is L. Ian. It is a beach head from which the Tories can launch an electoral assault into what remains of grits strongholds in Montreal. I have great confidence in Senator Smith.
Christmas came early for Larry Smith, who was named to the Senate on Monday along with Don Meredith, an evangelical minister and youth activist in Toronto's black community.
Both Smith and Meredith have taken the ritual pledge to support eight-year term limits and the election of senators from their province. But this is boilerplate -absent a constitutional amendment of seven provinces and 50 per cent of the population, Stephen Harper can't change the composition of the Senate, at least not without a reference to the Supreme Court.
What Harper is really saying with these appointments is that he intends to be competitive in Montreal and Toronto, the two largest cities in the country, where the Conservatives don't hold a single seat.
The Greater Toronto Area consists of two segments: the suburban area-code 905 belt where the Conservatives are already competitive and where former Ontario police commissioner Julian Fantino won a by-election in the former Liberal bastion of Vaughan last month; and the city itself, between Highway 401 and Lake Ontario, where the Conservatives have not won a single seat since the free-trade election of 1988.
Smith's appointment has the appearance of being the first in a potentially game-changing chain of events.

Met gets it wrong yet again
Why do we believe these people can predict 100 years of climate when their prediction for the last three years have been utterly wrong?
More from James Delingpole:
More from James Delingpole:
The Met’s blunder follows similar cockups last year and the year before. In February, Met Office scientist Peter Stott declared that 2009 was an anomaly, and that milder and wetter winters were now — for sure — to be expected. He suggested that exceptionally cold British winters such as the one that occurred in 1962-63 were now expected to occur “about once every 1,000 years or more, compared with approximately every 100 to 200 years before 1850.” Now, the Met Office is admitting that the current December may be the coldest in Britain in the past 100 years.
No doubt the warmist crowd will be quick to express outrage at this blatant confusion of global climate with local weather, but that won’t wash. The Met makes its short-term forecasts on the basis of the same brand of massive computer power and Rube Goldberg modelling used to project the global climate. The suggestion that forecasting the climate is easier than forecasting the weather comes into the same category as acknowledging that governments couldn’t run a lemonade stand, but then believing that they can “manage” an economy.

West Island Dream Team Larry and Agop!
The Smiths
The Senators
Just got back from the Senator and Candidate Larry Smith event in the West Island. It was crammed full of media and Tory supporters. It was pretty impressive given how last minute it was. This is news I have know for the last few days. Senator Smith was introduced by HM Minister of Public Works Christian Paradis. The crowd chanted Larry more than once. Senator Smith talked about the hard work he had to to do to win over the people of Lac Sr Louis. Senator Smith will be a hard working member of the Tory team/. He and Agop will give us a real beach head in the Montreal area. This is very exciting. It is a nice Christmas present for Quebec Tories.

Hopefully that will make many more heads at the red star explode.
Ignatieff is least convincing when pin-balling between past and present. “Country-boying,” as the Americans aptly label dumbing-down leadership to match coffee-shop sensibilities, sadly diminishes who he was as well as what he might reasonably become in the flattering glow that illuminates opposition leaders who survive to become prime ministers.
It’s far from sure that Ignatieff will ever move off the porch. More certain is that those who come sniffing at political power better be prepared to get kicked around until they prove who they are and why they deserve to be lead dog.

Epilogue to the Duke "rape" case?
A fitting final act to this terrible miscarriage of justice by a dem district attorney ( nifong was disbarred).
Now the woman who made the false accusations, Crystal Mangum (whose name was kept from the public while the lacrosse players were publicly identified and pilloried on campus and in the press), has been convicted of child abuse, injury of personal property, and resisting arrest in Durham, NC.
The sad fact is that hoaxes regarding crimes against politically correct victims are quite common. The prevailing media and political climate provides too many incentives for hoaxers. Megan Fox has a compilation of the top ten such hoaxes pushed by a compliant media this morning on the NewsReal Blog. I believe that the penalties for such hoaxes ought to ewqual the penalty for the crime being hoaxed -- in other words, serious prison time in the case of a phony rape accusation. These are serious crimes that victimize innocents, often with a race or gender bias intent.

HM PM Stephen Harper has indicated that there will not be public funding for an arena in Quebec City. That is good. We need to cut spending!
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper threw more cold water on the idea that the federal government could help build an arena so that Quebec City could win an NHL franchise.
“There’s no federal program to fund professional sports facilities,” he told French-TV network TVA hosts Paul Larocque and Jean Lapierre from the prime minister’s cottage at Harrington Lake, Que. in an interview recorded Dec. 17. “Not now, not in previous decades. Pro sports are first and foremost the responsibility of the private sector, and I am encouraging the private sector to come up with a solution.
“If Ottawa did something like that, we’d have to do it across the country, and the list is long. Hamilton, Regina, Edmonton, even my hometown of Calgary, everyone wants a new facility.”
Harper suggested that traditionally Ottawa would only get into funding an arena if it were part of Olympic bid.
Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume “told me he would be looking to have Quebec City bid on the Olympic Games. And I encouraged him. Historically, that’s how Ottawa supports the development of large-scale sports facilities.”
Harper added: “You have to be realistic. A project of this nature has to be affordable and fair for the entire country.”

Possible new party, Charest's future to command attention in Quebec in 2011
By: Andy Blatchford, The Canadian Press
MONTREAL - A movement is afoot in Quebec to nudge provincial politics to the right, a push that's gaining grassroots traction in a province known for high taxes, expensive social programs and a hefty debt.
And its influence could have implications for the rest of Canada in 2011.
The campaign aims to move Quebec politics away from the perpetual independence debate and focus instead on the pressing economic concerns pummelling the province.
The right-of-centre groundswell has been likened to the U.S. Tea Party, albeit on a smaller scale.
At least for now.
"We're discussing things today that we weren't discussing five years ago," said Joanne Marcotte, co-founder of a network that describes itself as a forum for conservative-minded people in the province.
"If Quebec wants to keep paying for its social programs, even with equalization (payments), there are limits."
Marcotte's group, the Reseau Liberte-Quebec (or Quebec freedom network), is gathering steam as Premier Jean Charest's Liberals find themselves under fire over numerous allegations of corruption, influence-peddling and collusion with the construction industry.

L. Ian macdonald on posturing iffy
L. Ian Macdonald agrees with some of my points. The grits are being crushed by the Tory Fundraising Juggernaut. The grits are in terrible shape to call an election. I don't see an election before 2012, though an election now might be good strategically for the Tories.
Iggy talks tough, but there's no way he's ready for an election
By L. IAN MACDONALD Canada's Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff speaks during the Liberal caucus Christmas Party in Ottawa December 15, 2010.Photograph by: Blair Gable, ReutersIn a series of year-end interviews, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff signalled he would pull the trigger on an election because of irreconcilable differences with the Conservatives over the budget.
A budget he hasn't seen yet. "We are ready for an election," he boldly declared, "and we think Canadians are ready for an election."
Really?
A week before Christmas, an election would be the last thing on Canadians' shopping lists. But Iggy insists that he sensed a groundswell for an election during his summer bus tour. The reason: Canadians don't like Stephen Harper. "Get rid of him," he says they told him.
As for the Liberals, they are so not ready for an election it's not funny.
On the same day Iggy gave his year-enders, the CBC put out an EKOS poll that showed the Liberals trailing the Conservatives by nearly 10 points, 35 to 26 per cent. (The CBC later put out a revised six-point spread, 32 to 26 per cent). Whatever, there are no elections to be won when a party goes into a campaign with 26 per cent -one voter in four.
The Liberals have very little money for an election -they have trouble raising $4 million a year, while the Tories raise $4 million a quarter, from a much larger donor base.
The Liberal leader is a drag on the ticket, with his approval ratings trailing the party's voting intention by at least 2-1 in the polls. Only the renowned Liberal brand is keeping the party competitive. As for the legendary Big Red Machine: It's a myth.
And the Liberal message is very much a work in progress, but consists almost entirely of product differentiation from the Tories.

Protectionism is a bad idea
Another great editorial in the NP. I have generally been very positiuve about Tory attempts to increase free trade. I am not very happy about the BHP decision and apparently neither are our trading partners. Trade will bring more jobs and prosperity. Barriers should be lowered , not raised. I think Canad should unilaterally drop trade restrictions against the world's poorest nations ( especially if they are memebers of the Commonwealth). Let Canad truly be a free trader.
We all pay for protectionism
The federal government's decision to block the foreign takeover of Potash Corporation is coming home to roost, and the casualty may be billions of dollars in investment and trade. No, not for BHP Billiton or the shareholders of Potash Corporation, but for all Canadians. By opting to nix BHP's bid (and safeguard 13 Conservative seats in Saskatchewan), the government is imperiling the conclusion of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
The EU is currently Canada's second-largest trading partner, after the United States. According to the WTO, it accounted for 9% of Canadian trade in goods ($26-billion in exports, $41-billion in imports) in 2009 and 18% of its trade in services ($11.6-billion in exports, $14.4-billion in imports) in 2008.
CETA would significantly boost these numbers, and our GDP. According to the EU CETA delegation and its senior advisor, Canadian trade expert Fred Kingston, Canadian exports to the EU
would rise by over 20% by 2014. This would yield an annual increase of 0.77% in Canada's GDP (or $12-billion), 46% of which would come from the liberalization of services, 33% from full tariff elimination and 21% from the reduction of non-tariff barriers.

Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of a Canadian Forces member:

"Corporal Martin was a brave Canadian who made the ultimate sacrifice while proudly serving his country.
"Thanks to Canadian Forces members like him, we continue to make real progress in Afghanistan, rebuilding the country and contributing to the peace and security of its people.
"We will never forget Corporal Martin's bravery and his sacrifice to make life better for others."

Merry Christmas from MP Nina Grewal
Thank you Nina Grewal for this Christmas greeting! Most of the anti Christmas stuff comes from ( mostly Christian and white people)liberal do gooders trying not to offend people who are not white and or Christian. I have many friends of many different faith traditions. We all respect each others traditions. That is how it should be in Canada.

Ugly fight against a death-cult ideology
By SALIM MANSUR, QMI Agency
At the year end, and this year also brings to an end a conflict-ridden decade, we are ritually inundated with reviews of past months and predictions for the future in magazines and journals from around the world.
On my desk, for instance, I have the Economist cautioning us about the “dangers of a rising China,” and the prestigious journal Foreign Affairs assembling wise individuals to map for us what we might find in the “World Ahead.”
From my perspective — one shaped by travels, readings and talking with people in foreign lands — there is a seismic shift unfolding in global politics and culture.
The man who sensed this shift perhaps most acutely, and described presciently its effect as the “clash of civilizations” was Samuel Huntington.
The severest of this clash is one between political Islam and the West.
I say political Islam to distinguish this ideology of murder and mayhem from Islam — the faith-tradition of hundreds of millions of simple, honest, God-fearing Muslims devoted to their family as were my parents, and also victims of Islamists who turned a simple faith into death-cult ideology.
This struggle between political Islam and the West will stay with us well into the next decade and, perhaps, beyond. It will end only when Islamists are effectively defeated and political Islam expunged similar to the defeat of German Nazis and Japanese militarists.
The struggle of this nature is invariably ugly. It is also bewildering to people caught in the midst of the struggle....

Rex on iffy
Rex says iffy is just visiting. iffy is tone deaf with respect to Canadian politics. This is to be expected fro a man who hasnt lived her for many years. Indeed Rex suggest iffy is delusional. iffy is the gift that keeps on giving
And, finally, Mr. Ignatieff just doesn’t seem to have the “tune” of Canadian politics yet. In one of his year-end musings he offered one of — to my mind — the most outre observations ever on his own sense of his relation to Canadian voters: He seemed to be saying that he shares some of the appeal of Toronto conservative maverick Rob Ford. If Mr. Ignatieff seriously thinks that people look at Rob Ford and Michael Ignatieff and count up the similarities, I fear he is in a fantasy too deep for rescue.

Good for the Ontario Court of Appeals
I guess all judges aren't useless grit hacks. These terrorists will have a lot of time to ponder their treasonous acts.
Ontario’s Court of Appeal sent a stern message Friday on the consequences of terrorism offences, dramatically increasing sentences given to three convicted Canadian terrorists and dismissing an appeal from the ringleader of the Toronto 18.
In the case of Mohammad Momin Khawaja, the first person charged under Canadian anti-terrorism law for financing and facilitating a British-based terrorist group, the court imposed a life sentence plus 24 years — massively upping 10 years he was handed last year after spending five years in pretrial custody.
“Terrorism must not be allowed to take root in Canada. When it is detected, it must be dealt with in the severest of terms,” the judgement stated.
The court also dismissed Khawaja’s appeal of his terrorism convictions.
Toronto 18 members Saad Gaya and Saad Khalid, who respectively received 12-year and 14-year sentences for participating in a plot to detonate powerful truck bombs in downtown Toronto, also had their sentences increased substantially — to 18 years for Gaya and 20 for Khalid.

Watch out chicken littless...
Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner, a fellow climate realist ( and father of a good friend of mine) will be watching over the chicken littles. Congressman Sensenbrenner has spoken at a couple of the Climate Realist conferences I have attended. I have had the chance to speak to him on a few occasions. He will not allow the hoaxsters free reign any longer! Already the GOP have eliminated wasteful committee. Things are looking up for climate realism. It has been a very good year.
Warming skeptic gets key Science post
Leading House climate skeptic Jim Sensenbrenner appears to have landed a perch to lead investigations into global warming science.
The Wisconsin Republican is set to become the vice chairman of the House Science Committee under incoming Chairman Ralph Hall (R-Texas), Hall told POLITICO Thursday.

CCF defends the Jaworskis
I am a long time supporter of the Canadian Constitution Foundation. I have also been a long time supporter of the Institute for Liberal Studies and the Liberty Summer seminar. I am very pleased that the CCF willl be defending my friends the Jaworskis and the LSS. These ridiculous charges should be dropped.
You can hell the CCF defend liberty by donating money and maybe your time if you are a lawyer!
CCF defending Jaworskis: Notice of Constitutional Question filed in Liberty Summer Seminar Case
The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) today announced that it is providing pro-bono legal counsel to Marta, Lech and Peter Jaworski, in their defence against charges in respect of an alleged violation of a zoning by-law of the municipality of Clarington in Ontario.
The CCF also today filed a Notice of Constitutional Question informing the Attorneys General of Canada and Ontario that it intends to argue that a provincial law and by-law that the municipality of Clarington interprets as prohibiting the holding of the annual Liberty Summer Seminar, is a violation of the freedom of peaceful assembly guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Liberty Summer Seminar, founded in 2001, is an annual two-day seminar and barbecue that celebrates and promotes Canadian freedoms--individual liberty, private property, and economic freedom.
CCF Executive Director and lawyer Chris Schafer said, “The Jaworskis escaped Poland in 1984 fearing persecution by the government for distributing pro-freedom literature. It’s ironic that they are now facing charges in Canada for allowing their son to host an event in support of freedom on their property”.
According to Marta Jaworski, “I will always let my son use our property for what he believes in, and for the freedom we came to Canada to find”.
The Canadian Constitution Foundation is a registered charity, independent and non-partisan, which defends constitutional freedoms through education and litigation.

The damage done by trudeau
As well as doing a lot of damage to Canada, pet also seems to have caused a great deal of damage to the grits, mostly by damaging the grit brand in the west and Quebec. trudeau was a terrible pm and a nasty, arrogant man.
While Trudeau's policies undermined national unity and scorched Liberal fortunes in the West and Quebec for the past generation, he did not similarly offend voters in other parts of Canada. In fact, over the past eight elections Liberals have done better in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland than when Trudeau was leader. While Trudeau took 41 per cent of the vote in Ontario, his successors won 43 per cent of their votes. Had it just been Trudeau's style and personality that offended voters, rather than his policies, then the animosity towards Liberals that followed would not be so regionalized or sustained.
Pierre Trudeau has done to Liberal fortunes in Quebec what Robert Borden did for the Tories. When Borden's government introduced conscription during the First World War, he said that conscription "would kill Quebec ministers and the party for 25 years." This estimate was on the low side since it took more than 65 years before the Tories would hold Quebec over consecutive elections.

Mathew !8: 1-4 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
Why would anyone shoot a child, let alone their own child. Why didn't this "father" shoot himself in the head first. Looks like the Quebec judge made a mistake. In Texas this monster will get the punishment he so richly deserves, but that won't bring back Deyan. I am utterly sickened by this news.
Montreal family’s custody battle takes deadly turn
This picture of Danyela Perisic, 12, and her brother, Deyan, 10, was taken when they were in Montreal. Danyela was shot eight times allegedly by her father, with whom the two were living in Texas. Deyan died in hospital from his gunshot wounds
Graeme Hamilton in Montreal, National Post · Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010
When Danyela and Deyan Perisic testified during their parents’ custody dispute in Quebec Superior Court last April, they made it clear they wanted to stay with their mother in Montreal. “They did not want to go back to Texas,” Justice Hélène Lebel noted in her ruling. The children, then 11 and 9, had spent virtually their entire lives in Montreal. Their mother had returned with them to Canada last January after a four-month attempt at reconciliation with her estranged husband, Predrag Perisic, who had moved to Texas in 2007 seeking work. But Justice Lebel dismissed the children’s concerns. She agreed with Mr. Perisic’s contention that under international law their “habitual residence” was Texas, where they had lived a total of 137 days, and they should be returned there to let the courts determine their fate.
They were uprooted from school — Danyela’s Grade Six graduation dress went unworn — and sent to live with their father.
“They do not wish to go back so they will certainly be perturbed,” Justice Lebel wrote. “However, these children are intelligent and capable of coping. They are not being returned to a place where they will be in danger.”
Late Monday afternoon, law enforcement officers executing a warrant for Mr. Perisic’s arrest arrived at a secluded lake house in Coldspring, Texas, where he was in hiding with his son and daughter. After clearing the ground floor, they had begun moving upstairs when they heard gunshots coming from the back of the house.
Deyan Perisic, 10, was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His sister Danyela, 12, had been shot eight times and was airlifted to a Houston hospital, where her condition is listed as stable. Their father is in custody, charged with murder.
Mary Quinn, the Houston attorney for the children’s mother, Vera Vucerakovich, said there were plenty of warning signs that Mr. Perisic was dangerous. “If you talk to my client, she all along has believed that this man was capable of violence,” Ms. Quinn said in an interview. “That was part of the reason that they weren’t living together.”

Montreal Jubilation Choir 2010 Concert
Christmas starts with me with the annual concert of the Montreal Jubilation Choir. The choir is directed by Trevor Payne , who has had some health issues this year. The concert also boasted Ranee Lee and jazz superstar Oliver Jones this year. It featured the songs of the choirs latest album A Celebration in Time. It was a wonderful music of song. Oliver Jones and Ranee Lee were amazing. The choir even sung a song they had sung in the presence of HM the Queen , earlier this year. It was great going out with many fiends and enjoying the music of the season. You should buy the album!

cancun failure
I have already written about the failure in cancun. Very little was accomplished, which I think is a wonderful thing. The chicken littles are trying to spin this failure, but they know it is the end of kyoto and hard CO2 limits. Let the chicken littles continue to be deluded. The rest of us will continue to live our lives in the 21st and not the 18th century.
More from Lorne Gunter.
There really isn't much to pick and choose from between the Copenhagen accord and the Cancun one. Still, in the wacky, surreal world of the UN, perception is reality; activity passes for achievement. And delegates left this year's two-week, on-the-beach negotiations feeling very much better about what they had done than they did after last year's cold, wet gathering at a Danish port. So it must be true that the Cancun accord is an important lurch in the right direction. Right?
It's true that at Cancun, the Mexican hosts were able to get all countries to agree to cut their emissions. This includes developing countries, which had before resisted all efforts to impose caps on their carbon dioxide production. Even China and India agreed, although both had before been adamant that they would accept no limits until their economies rivalled those of the developed nations.
This was heralded as an "important breakthrough." And perhaps it is, until you realize that there was no overall emissions target set, no worldwide quota on how much CO2 humans can pump into the atmosphere. Each country will be allowed to set its own limit and there will be no determination of whether or not any country's emission targets are adequate to stop climate change. All talk of legally binding limits was punted until at least next year's summit in South Africa.
An international fund of $30-billion annually was agreed to to help developing countries adapt to climate change. This sum will eventually rise to $100-billion a year. That sounds impressive, but all talk of details was tabled until at least 2011.
What activities will qualify for funding? If Canada helps a developing nation buy a Canadian natural gas-fired power plant to replace an old coal-fired plant will that count? And just how is the UN going to raise this money? Will it try to impose a worldwide carbon or financial-transaction tax? Um, call back next year, please. Such details are just too threatening to the spirit of Cancun.
