Good news for the Tories in yet another poll. The Tories lead on almost every economic issue. Defeat the Tories iffy, I dare you.
"It just shows the strength of the Tory positioning because they're seen as the best on the biggest issue," he said. "The Liberals haven't found an issue, but the Tories have a 20 to 25 per cent advantage on just about every economic question you want to ask."
Although the economy remains a top concern for Canadians, fewer identified it as such in 2010 than in 2009, when it was at a high of 63 per cent. Bricker said the decline can be attributed to the fact fears of a collapsing Canadian economy were never realized, leading to a nationwide impression that the economy will be OK.
Focus on the environment also declined to 19 per cent in 2010 from its October 2007 peak of 27 per cent. But as long as the environment and international economies stay within the focus of the media, Canadians will continue to list both as a top concern, he said.
"Opinions on the economy and environment are driven by news," Bricker said. "So, with oil spilling in the Gulf, or another financial company failing, the numbers on those issues will remain high."
