Khaled Abu Toameh
In response to Israel apartheid week, alternate speakers were brought in. Israeli Palestinian journalist Khaled Abu Toameh spoke last night at McGill Univeristy. Abu Toameh writes for a number of papers and also writes for the Jerusalem Post. He is a great speaker. He says he is pro human and thus he supports Israeli and Palestinians. He criticizes both sides in the conflict. He finds that the Palestinians have done litted to give themselves self government. He says things are much worse since the Oslo peace agreement. He also doesn't find demonizing Israel in the west a useful thing for Palestinians, it just hardens the resolve of some Israelis. Khaled Abu Toameh asks what about the " Arab brother nations". Why have they not helped the Palestinians. He disarmed his detractors with humour and facts. Once again it was nice to see that he was allowed to speak. I was sitting just behind some Palestinian supporters, who quietly seethed with rage. One asked why the Israelis should control when humanitarian aid enters Gaza. Abu Toameh replied becuase the Palestinians have made themselves dependent on Israel. He did say he thought there was discrimination against Israeli Arabs, but he still prefers to live in Israel. He hopes the Palestinians would learn from the example of Israeli democracy and freedom. An very informative evening with a large turnout.
